Does learning a foreign language count as an extracurricular activity?

I've been teaching myself a foreign language outside of school and have become quite proficient. Is this something I can include as an extracurricular activity on my college application?

Absolutely! Learning a foreign language outside of school is an impressive and valuable skill that can definitely be counted as an extracurricular activity on your college application. Colleges appreciate applicants who take the initiative to pursue learning on their own and who are passionate about expanding their knowledge in different areas.

I'd recommend you describe your experience learning the language in detail in your application to highlight your commitment to self-improvement and cultural exploration. You can mention the resources you used (books, websites, apps, etc.), how long you've dedicated to learning the language, and any language-related experiences you've had, like conversing with native speakers or attending language meetups.

If you have any way to demonstrate your proficiency in the language (e.g. taking language certification exams, participating in language competitions, or showcasing a portfolio of your work), that could be a great addition to your application as well. The key is to illustrate your dedication, hard work, and passion for learning, which will set you apart from other applicants and let colleges know what an asset you will be to their campus community.
