ACT 25th percentile—What does it mean?

Hey guys, I'm a bit confused about what the 25th percentile for the ACT means. Does it mean that 25% of students scored at or below that score? Also, should I be worried if my score falls in the 25th percentile for some of the schools on my list? Thanks for the help!

Hello! A college's 25th percentile for the ACT score means that 25% of the students enrolled at that college scored at or below that specific number. In other words, it's the score separating the lowest 25% of enrolled students from the upper 75%.

If your score falls in the 25th percentile for some of the schools on your list, it shouldn't necessarily cause panic. However, it's important to recognize that your score is on the lower end for that particular institution. Keep in mind that many colleges consider a variety of factors in their admissions review process, including grades, course rigor, extracurricular activities, and essays, among others. Your ACT score isn't the sole factor in your application.

To strengthen your overall application, consider focusing on other important aspects like showcasing strong extracurricular activities, securing solid letters of recommendation, and writing powerful, unique essays. Having a balanced college list composed of target, reach, and safety schools is also a good strategy, as it ensures you have options in the event you aren't admitted into your top-choice schools.

Remember, each school's admissions process is different, so it's crucial to research the colleges you're applying to, understand their requirements, and determine whether your academic profile aligns with the profile of their admitted students. Good luck!
