How many times can we retake the ACT?

I just got my ACT scores back, and I'm not super happy with the results. How many times can I retake the ACT? Is there a limit to the number of attempts allowed? Thanks for any advice!

You can retake the ACT as many times as you'd like, as there is no official limit to the number of attempts allowed. However, it's important to keep in mind that retaking the test multiple times may not always be the most productive strategy for improving your score.

Typically, students tend to see score improvements within their first three or four attempts, after which their scores may plateau or fluctuate. Instead of solely focusing on retaking the ACT, it's a good idea to evaluate your test preparation strategies and identify the areas where you could improve. This may include reviewing your study habits, finding targeted resources to address your weaknesses, or working with a tutor.

Also, note that many colleges will use either the highest single test date score or "superscore" by taking the highest sectional scores across multiple tests to create a new composite score. Therefore, it can be beneficial to take the test a few times to get a strong superscore, but beyond a certain point, consider focusing on other aspects of your college application, such as your extracurriculars, essays, and coursework.

When planning your retake strategy, make sure to consider the time you have before application deadlines and the availability of test dates, so you can fit in your retakes while balancing other responsibilities. Good luck!
