Does volunteering abroad look good on Ivy League applications?

I have the chance to take part in a volunteer project abroad, helping with education and community development. While I'm motivated to do this for personal growth, I'm also wondering if it will help highlight my dedication to service in my Ivy League applications. I have my sights on schools like Harvard, Brown, and Princeton. Any advice is appreciated!

Hi there! It’s great that you're considering participating in a volunteering project abroad. These types of experiences can be incredibly rewarding and eye-opening, both for personal growth and for demonstrating your dedication to service on your college applications. Ivy League schools, like the ones you mentioned, are known for valuing well-rounded applicants who are not only academically inclined but also invested in giving back to society.

That being said, it's important that your motivation for participating in the project aligns with your genuine passion and not solely for the sake of college applications. Admissions officers can often tell whether something was pursued out of genuine interest or just for resume-padding.

In application essays or interviews, sharing specific examples and anecdotes from your experience abroad will help depict the impact you made and how it contributed to your personal growth. This strategy can be more powerful than simply listing the experience in a list of extracurricular activities.

Good luck with your decision! These types of opportunities can be highly impactful in shaping your outlook on life and, in turn, could become a significant part of your college application story.
