How difficult is it to get into the University of Maryland?

Hey guys, UMD is one of my top choices and I'm a little nervous. I'm wondering how hard it is to get into the University of Maryland? Could someone give me an idea of what my chances might be with a decent GPA and extracurriculars?

Hello! Admission to the University of Maryland (UMD) can be competitive depending on the program you're applying to and your individual profile. Overall, UMD's acceptance rate hovers around 44%, so it is considered moderately selective.

To gauge your chances of admission, it would help to know your exact GPA, standardized test scores (if available), and the specifics of your extracurricular activities. However, I can still provide you with some general information. UMD looks for students with a strong academic profile, and the average high school GPA of admitted students is around 4.45 on a weighted scale. As for test scores, while UMD is test-optional for the 2024-2025 application cycle, submitting a strong SAT or ACT score can boost your chances of admission if they are higher than the middle 50% range—which is 1380-1510 for SAT and 32-35 for ACT.

Aside from academics, UMD takes into consideration your extracurricular involvement. They prefer to see candidates who were deeply involved in a few activities, showcasing commitment, leadership, and passion. Having a "spike," or specialization in a certain area, is generally more appealing to universities than being a "well-rounded" student.

Another important component of your application is your essay. A strong essay will showcase your personality, goals, and what you can contribute to the UMD community. Make sure to keep your essay focused, engaging, and authentic to boost your chances.

Given the acceptance rate and the general profile of accepted students, I would say that if you have a GPA close to or above the average, strong extracurriculars that show your passion, and a well-crafted essay, you would have a reasonable chance of getting into the University of Maryland. However, to give a more accurate assessment, specific information about your profile would be required.

Best of luck!
