Grading SAT Practice Tests?

Hi everyone! I'm working on preparing for the SAT and I recently took a practice test. I'm not sure how to properly grade it and find out where I stand. Can someone explain how I should go about grading my SAT practice test or point me to a resource that can help? Thank you!

Hello! It's essential to accurately grade your SAT practice test to understand your current performance level and identify areas for improvement. To grade your practice test, follow these steps:

1. Score the individual sections: First, you'll need to grade the two main sections—Reading and Writing, and Math. For each question you answered correctly, give yourself 1 point. For each incorrect answer, subtract ¼ point. Keep a record of your individual section scores.

2. Calculate Raw Scores: Add up your points for each section to get the Raw Scores. This means calculating your Reading and Writing Raw Score and your Math Raw Score separately.

3. Convert Raw Scores to Scaled Scores: Use the answer key provided with the practice test (often available in the test booklet or online) to convert your Raw Scores to Scaled Scores for each section, typically ranging from 160 to 760. Note that the conversion tables can vary between different tests, so ensure you're using the correct conversion table for your specific practice test.

4. Combine Scaled Scores: Add the Scaled Scores from the Reading and Writing section and the Math section together. The final sum will give you your total SAT score, which ranges from 320 to 1520.

As for resources, The College Board offers study materials such as Official SAT Practice Tests, which come with answer keys and scoring guidelines—you can find these resources on their website or in their Official SAT Study Guide. Additionally, the Bluebook™ app (available from spring 2023) also has scoring tools for the digital SAT. Lastly, if you're using private test prep materials, ensure that they come with answer keys and scoring tables for accurate grading.

Good luck with your SAT preparation, and don't forget to carefully review your results to identify areas where you can improve!
