Should I use a college counselor or rely on my school's college counselor?

Hi all! I'm a junior who's starting to feel a bit overwhelmed by the college application process. My school has a college counselor, but I know some people hire their own private college counselors. What are the pros and cons of using a private college counselor versus sticking with my school's counselor? Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi there! It's completely normal to feel overwhelmed by the college application process. Both school college counselors and private counselors can have their advantages and disadvantages.

School college counselors tend to be more cost-effective, as their services are usually included in your school's offerings. However, they may be stretched thin due to having to work with many students at once. This could potentially limit the amount of individual attention and personalization they can provide.

Private college counselors, on the other hand, can offer more personalized attention and tailored advice, as they typically work with a smaller number of students. Keep in mind, though, they can be expensive.

Ultimately, the decision depends on your specific needs and resources. It might be helpful to first consult with your school's college counselor and see if they can provide the support you need. If you feel you need more guidance, consider exploring private counselor options.

Good luck with your college application journey!
