How many recommenders for Common App?

Hello all! I'm going to start working on my college apps soon and I'm wondering how many recommenders I should ask for the Common App? Any advice about choosing the right recommenders would be awesome too! Cheers!

The number of recommenders you need to add through the Common App can vary slightly depending on the specific college's requirements, so you should always check each college's recommendations policy on their admissions website. However, it is always a good idea to have two teacher recommendations (one STEM teacher, one humanities teacher) and a counselor recommendation.

As for choosing the right recommenders, it's important to ask teachers who know you well and can provide detailed insights into your character, work ethic, and academic abilities. Ideally, these teachers should have taught you in core academic subjects (e.g., English, math, science, social studies, or foreign language) during your junior or senior year. The strength of the relationship is more important than the prestige of the subject, so it's better to ask a teacher from a less prestigious subject if they can write a more personal and compelling letter than someone who teaches a more prestigious subject but doesn't know you as well.

Approach your teachers early to give them ample time to write a thoughtful and comprehensive letter. This is especially important because teachers may receive requests from multiple students.

Additionally, maintain an open line of communication with your school counselor, who can provide a holistic perspective on your overall high school experience, extracurricular involvement, and academic growth. If your school has specific policies about the recommendation process, make sure to follow those guidelines as well.

In summary, you should have at least two teacher recommenders and one counselor recommender for the Common App. Choose teachers who know you well to ensure they can provide a strong letter, and establish good communication with your school counselor. Remember to always check each college's requirements, as they may have additional or varying recommendation policies. Good luck with your college applications!
