how long is the SAT

Hey guys, I'm starting to prepare for the SAT, and I wanted to know how long the test actually takes. How much time should I plan on setting aside for the exam, including breaks? Are there any time management tips you can share for the different sections?

The SAT exam has a total duration of 3 hours (180 minutes) for the main sections, but you should also account for the breaks, instructions, and check-in process. Including these factors, the overall test experience will take around 4 hours. Here's a breakdown of the test format and time management tips for each section:

1. Reading and Writing: The Reading and Writing sections consist of two 32-minute modules, for a combined total of 64 minutes. You'll complete 54 questions, giving you approximately 71 seconds per question. Manage your time wisely by skimming the text for keywords and focusing on understanding the main ideas. Keep track of time as you go – consider spending no more than 65 seconds per question to have some extra time at the end to review.

2. Math: The Math sections consist of two 35-minute modules, for a combined total of 70 minutes. You'll complete 44 questions, giving you approximately 96 seconds per question (a little over a minute and a half). Make sure you thoroughly understand the question before attempting to solve it and use your allowed calculator efficiently on both math modules.

In addition to the test sections, you will have a 10-12 minute break between Reading and Math sections. Plan to bring light snacks and water to consume during this break and use the time to mentally prepare for the next section.

Overall, time management is key during the SAT. Practice using full-length timed exams to become comfortable with the test's pacing and format. Always monitor your time during the exam, and don't get stuck on difficult questions for too long; guess if needed and move on to maximize the number of questions you can answer.
