How many extracurriculars should I have for Ivy League applications?

Hello everyone! As a junior, I've started working on my college applications. I have a few extracurricular activities, but I'm wondering how many I should aim for to have a competitive Ivy League application. Do they prefer lots of activities, or a few with deep involvement? Thank you!

Hi there! It's great that you're starting to work on your college applications early. When it comes to extracurricular activities, the general consensus is that Ivy League schools appreciate quality over quantity. They're more interested in seeing a few activities where you've demonstrated deep involvement, commitment, and even leadership, as opposed to a long list of activities with only shallow participation.

For example, my son, who is currently attending an Ivy League university, focused on just a few activities throughout high school and was able to showcase his growth, passion, and dedication in each of those. He held leadership roles in student government, was involved in debate club, and volunteered at a local nonprofit.

Of course, it's always good to participate in activities that align with your interests and future goals. And remember that admissions officers are looking for well-rounded applicants. So, focus on developing your skills and passions within a few activities and build up your accomplishments in those areas. Best of luck!
