UCSB in-state tuition - what's the deal?

Hello! I'm considering applying to the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) next year, and I'm from California. Can anyone explain how the in-state tuition works there? Thank y'all in advance!

Hello! In-state tuition at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) is available to students who qualify as California residents for tuition purposes. Being a California resident means you'll pay a reduced tuition rate compared to out-of-state students. For the 2024-2025 academic year, the estimated cost of the in-state tuition and fees at UCSB is around $16,000, while out-of-state students are required to pay an additional nonresident supplemental tuition of around $30,000 on top of the base tuition.

To qualify for in-state tuition as a California resident, you must meet the following requirements:

1. Physical presence: You must have been physically present in California for more than one year (366 days) immediately before the residency determination date (RDD), which is generally the first day of classes.

2. Intent: You must demonstrate your intent to make California your home by establishing residential ties in the state (e.g., California driver's license, voter registration, banking, etc.) and relinquishing all ties with your former state of residence.

3. Financial independence: If you are under 24 years old and unmarried, you are presumed to be financially dependent on your parents. Thus, your parents must meet the above requirements as well. However, exceptions apply for certain cases such as students who are married, have dependents, or are active duty military, etc.

Keep in mind that living in California solely for educational purposes may not qualify you for in-state tuition. Applications for a change of residency status are subject to review by UCSB's Office of the Registrar.

Make sure to submit your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or California Dream Act Application (for eligible undocumented students) to determine your eligibility for financial aid, such as grants, work-study opportunities, and loans.

Good luck with your college application process, and I hope you find this information helpful!
