Sam Houston State GPA Requirements

Hi all, I'm a high school junior currently researching Sam Houston State University. I'm curious about their GPA requirements for admission. Can someone enlighten me on what kind of GPA (weighted or unweighted) is generally needed and if they have any specific course requirements? Thanks in advance!

Hello! It's great that you're interested in Sam Houston State University. When it comes to GPA requirements, there are several pathways to earning automatic acceptance at SHSU, depending on your GPA and test score (although SHSU is officially test-optional).

For example, if you have a 3.5 or above, you are guaranteed admission even if you don't submit a test score. If you have a lower GPA, you can still be accepted automatically if you meet certain benchmarks on the SAT or ACT, or you can still apply test-optional, in which case your application will be considered holistically.

You can find a complete breakdown of the GPA and testing requirements for automatic admission to SHSU here: https://catalog.shsu.edu/undergraduate/academic-policies-procedures/admission-standards/

Regarding course requirements, SHSU follows the Texas State Recommended High School Program, which consists of:

- 4 credits of English Language Arts

- 4 credits of Math (including Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II)

- 4 credits of Science (including Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, as well as one advanced science course)

- 3 credits of Social Studies (including World History, World Geography, and U.S. History)

- 2 credits of the same foreign language

- 1 credit of Physical Education

- 1 credit of Fine Arts

- 0.5 credit of Health

- 3.5 credits of electives

Make sure you're meeting these requirements in high school to ensure you're on track for admission to SHSU. Best of luck with your college research and application process!
