What's included in the SAT?

Hey everyone, I'm trying to decide which test to take, ACT or SAT. Can someone tell me what's in the SAT? Knowing the topics covered might help me make a decision. Thanks!

Sure! As of spring 2024, the SAT went fully digital and its structure changed. The digital SAT is divided into two main sections: Reading and Writing, and Math. Here's a breakdown of each section:

1. Reading and Writing: This section has two 32-minute modules, where you'll complete a total of 54 questions. You'll have about 71 seconds per question. The Reading and Writing section tests your comprehension of reading passages and your ability to understand grammar and punctuation rules. The reading passages can be from various sources, including literature, history, social studies, and science. Within this section, there will also be questions related to data interpretation from charts and graphs within the passages.

2. Math: This section consists of two 35-minute modules, with a total of 44 questions. You'll have 96 seconds per question, or a little over a minute and a half. The Math section covers topics that include arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and basic trigonometry, as well as some questions involving data analysis and statistics. In the digital version of the SAT, you're allowed to use a calculator on both math modules.

In summary, the digital SAT has:

- Reading and Writing: two 32-minute modules (54 questions)

- Math: two 35-minute modules (44 questions)

The total duration of the digital SAT is 134 minutes, to complete 98 questions.

It's important to note that the SAT no longer includes an essay component. Additionally, the SAT doesn't have a separate science section like the ACT does; however, scientific concepts and reasoning may be integrated into questions throughout the SAT.

It's a good idea to try out some practice tests for both the SAT and ACT to see which format and content best suit your strengths and test-taking abilities. Good luck in making your decision!
