National Merit Scholarship SAT Score?

I've been studying hard for the SAT and I'm hoping to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship. What SAT scores usually qualify students for this scholarship?

The National Merit Scholarship Program actually uses PSAT/NMSQT scores, not SAT scores, to determine eligibility. Students qualify for the scholarship based on their performance on the PSAT/NMSQT taken in their junior year of high school.

To become a National Merit Semifinalist, you'll need to achieve a high enough Selection Index score (which is calculated by doubling the sum of your Reading, Writing and Language, and Math scores). The qualifying Selection Index score varies by state and year, as it's determined by the top 1% of test-takers in each state.

For reference, the maximum Selection Index score you can achieve on the PSAT/NMSQT is 228, and the minimum qualifying score typically falls around the 210-222 range, depending on your state. Keep in mind that to become a National Merit Finalist and eventually a scholarship recipient, you'll need to fulfill additional requirements, such as maintaining a strong GPA and completing an application.

While SAT scores don't play a direct role in the National Merit Scholarship eligibility, they may still be important in the later stages of the competition if you qualify as a Semifinalist, as they can help confirm your academic abilities. It's recommended to focus on preparing well for the PSAT/NMSQT in your junior year if your goal is to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship. Good luck!
