Harvard average scores and stats?

Hey everyone! I'm curious about the average scores and stats that are usually required for admission to Harvard. What do successful applicants typically have in terms of GPA, course rigor, and extracurriculars? Thanks in advance!

Hi there! I can certainly help you understand the average scores and stats for students admitted to Harvard.

GPA: While Harvard doesn't post an average GPA, admitted students generally have extremely strong academic records with many earning mostly As in their courses.

Course Rigor: Admitted students typically take the most challenging courses available to them. This may include Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), or honors courses. Harvard expects applicants to have taken a strong course load that demonstrates their ability to excel in and handle a college-level curriculum.

Standardized Test Scores: For the 2024-2025 application cycle, Harvard has returned to requiring SAT or ACT scores. While they don't have a strict SAT or ACT cutoff, successful applicants usually have scores in the top percentiles. For context, the middle 50% SAT ranges for recent incoming classes have been around 1490-1580, and the middle 50% ACT ranges have been around 34-35.

Extracurriculars: Harvard seeks students who have demonstrated passion and achievement in their extracurricular activities. They often admit applicants with a "spike," or a highly-developed specialty, whether that be in athletics, community service, research, or another area. Successful applicants usually have impressive accomplishments in Tier 1 or 2 extracurriculars (see below).

Tier 1: Rare activities that show exceptional achievement or leadership at the national or international level

Tier 2: Activities that showcase high levels of achievement and leadership

While these stats can give you a general idea of what a successful Harvard applicant looks like, keep in mind that the admissions process evaluates applicants holistically. Your essays, letters of recommendation, and other factors will also impact their decision.

Finally, don't be discouraged if your stats don't perfectly align with these numbers. Every year, students who don't match these averages are admitted, due to other compelling aspects of their application. Good luck!
