Caltech admission process?

Hey folks, I'm looking into applying to the California Institute of Technology, and I was wondering what the admissions process is like. Are there any specific requirements or essays that I should be aware of before starting my application? Any advice would be appreciated!

The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) has a holistic admission process, which means they take into account various factors when reviewing applications, including academic achievements, extracurricular involvement, and personal qualities.

Here's an overview of the Caltech application process:

1. Application: Caltech accepts applications through the Common Application or the Coalition Application. You will need to fill out the general application form, including your biographical information, educational background, and involvement in activities.

2. Essays: Along with the main personal statement (which is part of the Common App or Coalition App), Caltech requires applicants to submit answers to several short-answer and essay prompts. These prompts usually revolve around your interest in science and engineering, what you hope to study at Caltech, and your intellectual curiosity. Make sure you answer these prompts honestly and in a way that showcases your passion for your intended major.

3. Test Scores: As of the 2024-2025 application cycle, Caltech requires all applicants to submit an SAT or ACT score report. They do not have a preference for one test over the other.

4. Subject Tests: Caltech no longer considers SAT Subject Tests, as they have been discontinued.

5. Letters of Recommendation: Caltech requires three letters of recommendation - one from a math or science teacher, one from a humanities, social sciences, or arts teacher, and one from a secondary school official (usually a counselor). Additionally, if you have conducted research or have a significant commitment to an extracurricular activity, you're encouraged to submit an optional letter from someone who can speak to your contributions in that area.

6. Transcript: Submit your official high school transcript, and if applicable, college/university transcripts. Make sure your courses and grades demonstrate a strong academic background in math, science, and related subjects.

7. Application Fee or Fee Waiver: Caltech requires a non-refundable application fee, but fee waivers are available for those who demonstrate financial need or qualify for a fee waiver through the College Board, NACAC, or an authorized Caltech official.

8. Financial Aid: If you're applying for financial aid, make sure to submit the required financial aid forms, including the FAFSA and CSS Profile, by the deadlines indicated on Caltech's website.

9. International Applicants: If English is not your first language and you have not been in an English-speaking education system for more than two years, Caltech requires you to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores as proof of English proficiency.

Important deadlines to keep in mind:

- Early Action: Apply by November 1, and you'll receive your decision by mid-December.

- Regular Decision: Apply by January 3, and you'll receive your decision by April 1.

Take your time to craft well-written essays that reflect your passion for and dedication to your field of interest. Given Caltech's emphasis on research and STEM-related activities, highlighting any experiences in those areas will be helpful. All the best with your application to Caltech!
