Can reading be counted as an extracurricular activity?

Hey! Junior here. I love reading and spend a lot of my free time doing so, but I'm not sure if this can be considered an extracurricular activity on my applications. Has anyone else included reading as an extracurricular? Thanks for your help!

Hi there! It's great to hear that you have a passion for reading. While reading on its own isn't typically considered an extracurricular activity, there are ways to transform your love for reading into something more substantial for your applications.

For instance, you could start or join a book club at your school or in your community. This will not only allow you to read and discuss books with others, but it also shows you have leadership and collaboration skills. You might also consider volunteering at your local library as a reading buddy for younger children, or even reviewing books for a blog or school newspaper.

Another option is to use your love for reading to pursue academic achievements. By participating in literature-related competitions like writing contests or National History Day, you demonstrate your commitment to reading and learning while also gaining recognition.

In summary, while reading alone as an activity might be a bit vague, there are definitely ways to transform it into a more formal extracurricular that showcases your passion, skills, and dedication. Good luck on your college journey!
