Strategies for getting into UCLA with subpar grades?

Hello! UCLA has always been my dream school, but my GPA is only around 3.3. I have strong SAT scores, good extracurriculars, and I plan on applying to their Film Studies program. Do any of you have tips or strategies for getting into UCLA with my current situation or should I focus on improving my application in other ways? I'd really appreciate any thoughts you have!

Hi there! It's great that you're thinking about your college applications and have a clear goal in mind. UCLA is a fantastic school, but yes, it is competitive. With a 3.3 GPA, it might be a bit more challenging for you, but don't worry—it's still possible!

Your strong SAT scores and extracurriculars are important factors that can help offset your GPA. However, it's essential to focus on things that will make you stand out. Your interest in the Film Studies program is a plus because it's a unique major that doesn't always see the same volume of applicants as other fields.

Since you have a specific program in mind, try to build your application around that. Consider using your personal essay and supplemental essays to showcase your passion for film, any related projects or experiences you've had, and how you envision continuing that interest at UCLA. Reach out to current UCLA Film Studies students to learn more about what they did to get accepted and what the program looks for.

You might also want to prepare a portfolio of previous film work you've done throughout high school. This will showcase your passion and talent and give the admissions committee additional criteria to evaluate you on.

While you can still try to improve your GPA, don't let that bring you down too much. Focus on what you can control at this point and always have alternative schools in mind. Believe in yourself and put your best foot forward in your application. Good luck!
