What happens if I apply through Early Decision but later decide not to attend?

I understand that applying Early Decision is binding, but I was wondering what would happen if I applied ED, got accepted, and ultimately decided not to attend the school. If anyone has gone through this process, or knows someone who has, I'd like to know what consequences or penalties there may be for doing this. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! So, you're right that Early Decision is binding and it's definitely a big decision to make. Now, if you're absolutely sure that you cannot attend the school after being accepted, there are a few possible outcomes.

First, your enrollment can simply be canceled by the school. This isn't ideal as it may damage your reputation and relationships with college admissions offices, especially if there's no legitimate reason (e.g. significant financial issues, family emergency).

Second, the school could revoke your financial aid or scholarship offer, if you had one. This could make it even harder for you to attend another institution if you're relying on financial assistance.

A friend of my child had a similar experience where they decided not to attend an ED school due to a change in family circumstances. The school understood and released them from their commitment but be aware that such cases are rare. So, think carefully before you commit to applying ED!
