Applying to Ivy League schools with a music major?

Hey everyone! I really want to study music in college (orchestral performance) and have been considering applying to Ivy League schools as well. Would this be a good idea, or should I focus more on conservatories? Would the admissions process be different for someone with a music major? Thanks for your input!

Hi there! It's great that you're considering a major in music and want to aim high with Ivy League schools! I have a child pursuing a similar path, so let me share some thoughts. Ivy League schools have strong music departments; however, conservatories offer a more focused education in that field. Ultimately, it depends on your priorities. If you want a well-rounded education with a broader range of courses alongside your music major, Ivy League schools are a great choice. If you're looking for a more immersive, music-focused experience, then consider conservatories.

As for the admissions process, most top-tier schools require supplemental materials for music applicants, such as a music portfolio or recorded audition. This will showcase your talent and dedication to the field. Be sure to check the individual schools' requirements, as they may vary.

Another option you could explore is applying to Ivy League schools that have a partnership with a nearby conservatory. For example, Harvard University partners with the New England Conservatory, allowing students to pursue combined degrees in both institutions. This way, you can get the best of both worlds with an Ivy League education while honing your musical skills at a conservatory.

Whatever you decide, make sure to research each school's music program thoroughly and consider not only the prestige but also the support and opportunities they offer for your specific area of musical interest. Good luck!
