Is a 780 SAT score good enough?

I just got my SAT results, and I scored a 780. Should I retake it? What kind of colleges can I apply to with this score?

A 780 SAT score is most likely not the complete score, as it could be a single section score rather than your combined score. The new digital SAT comprises two sections: Reading and Writing, and Math. Each section is scored on a scale of 200-800, with a combined score ranging from 400-1600. If 780 is a single section score, it is quite strong; however, if it is your combined score, it's below the national average, which is around 1050.

If 780 is your combined score, I would recommend retaking the SAT or considering the ACT, as a higher test score may improve your chances of admission at a broader range of schools. To prepare for a retake, use resources like the College Board's official SAT practice materials and Khan Academy, or consider joining an SAT prep course.

If you don't have much time or resources to improve your test scores, you can explore test-optional or test-flexible colleges. Many universities went test-optional due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and some have extended that policy - check individual college websites to see their current policies.

The types of colleges you can apply to with your SAT score depends on other aspects of your application, such as your GPA, course rigor, extracurricular activities, essays, and letters of recommendation. While a higher test score may enhance your chances at selective colleges, there are still many institutions that value a holistic approach to admissions and place emphasis on more than just test scores. So, look for colleges that best align with your academic achievements, interests, and goals.
