Any info on public colleges in Hawaii?

Aloha everyone! I'm considering applying to public colleges in Hawaii as an out-of-state student. What colleges do you recommend and what should I know about the application process and life on campus? Mahalo!

Aloha! Hawaii has a few public colleges worth considering, with the largest and most well-known being the University of Hawaii (UH) system, which comprises multiple campuses throughout the state. The main campus is the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UH Manoa) in Honolulu, which offers a wide variety of programs, from liberal arts to STEM fields. Other campuses in the UH system include University of Hawaii at Hilo (UH Hilo) and University of Hawaii-West Oahu (UHWO).

The application process is fairly straightforward. The UH system uses the Common Application, making it easy for you to apply to multiple schools within the system with one application. As an out-of-state student, the application requirements will be similar to those at other colleges: high school transcripts, standardized test scores (if the school is not test-optional), letters of recommendation, and a personal statement.

Admission to UH Manoa and UH Hilo is more competitive than other UH system schools, so having a strong academic record and solid extracurricular involvement can be beneficial in your application. Keep in mind that tuition and fees will be higher for out-of-state students, so make sure to fill out the FAFSA to determine your financial aid eligibility and research scholarship opportunities.

As for life on campus, each of the UH campuses offers unique experiences due to their location and size. UH Manoa is a large research university located in Honolulu, providing you with the opportunity to explore the bustling city life while still being close to the beauty of nature. UH Hilo is a smaller, more intimate campus that focuses on nurturing student success, and it's located on the Big Island, offering diverse natural landscapes to explore. UHWO is a community-engaged campus with smaller class sizes and a commitment to serving the local community.

One of the biggest draws to studying in Hawaii is the incredible island lifestyle and environment. You can expect warm weather, picturesque landscapes, and access to various outdoor activities like surfing, hiking, and snorkeling. However, bear in mind that the cost of living is generally higher in Hawaii compared to other states, but depending on your financial aid package and housing options, you may be able to balance that out.

Additionally, the Hawaiian cultural awareness and immersion that you’ll experience during your time at any of these campuses will be invaluable. By attending a college in Hawaii, you'll have the chance to learn about indigenous Hawaiian history, culture, and values, as well as connect with fellow students from diverse backgrounds.

Best of luck with your college search, and mahalo for asking!
