Searching for schools specializing in costume design

Anybody know any good schools that offer strong programs in costume design? I'm thinking about pursuing a career in theater or film costume design, but it's hard to find colleges with that specific program. Thanks in advance!

It's great that you're interested in pursuing a career in costume design for theater or film! There are several colleges and universities with strong programs in this field. I'll list a handful here, but make sure to research each school's curriculum, faculty, and facilities to see which one is the best fit for your goals and interests.

1. Tisch School of the Arts, New York University (NYU) – NYU's Tisch School offers a BFA in Design for Stage and Film, which includes costume design as part of its comprehensive training in theatrical and film design.

2. California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) – CalArts offers a BFA program in Experience Design and Production as part of the School of Theater. Their costume design concentration provides rigorous training in various aspects of costume design, from conceptualization to construction and execution.

3. University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) – UNCSA offers both undergraduate and graduate programs in costume design. The undergraduate BFA in Design and Production emphasizes design principles, research, and collaboration with other artists.

4. University of Cincinnati – College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) – The BFA in Costume Design and Technology program at CCM combines intensive coursework and hands-on experience to prepare students for careers in theater, film, and television.

5. Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) – CMU's School of Drama offers a comprehensive BFA in Design, which includes costume design along with scenic, lighting, and sound design.

6. Syracuse University – Their BFA program in Theater Design and Technology provides specialized training in costume design, as well as in other stage design aspects like set and lighting.

7. DePaul University – DePaul's Theatre School offers a BFA in Costume Design, providing concentrated study in costume design, rendering, and construction.

Keep in mind that you'll want to consider each institution's overall atmosphere, location, and financial aid offerings when making your decision. Attending open houses, connecting with current students, and visiting campus can provide valuable insights into each program's unique strengths. Good luck in your search for the perfect costume design program!
