How Good is Colby College for Economics?

Hey! I am seriously considering Colby College as my first choice, specifically for the Economics program. Has anyone any info on the quality of this program? Like how is the faculty interaction, internship opportunities, etc. Cheers guys!

Hey there! Colby College does have a strong reputation for its Economics program. The department offers a solid grounding in economic theory, both micro and macro, and allows for specialization in areas such as international, environmental, and monetary economics, among others. They boast a deep and varied course catalog, which helps students explore their interests in depth.

As for faculty interaction, the smaller class sizes allow for a great deal of interaction with professors. Small class sizes (about 10-20 students for upper-level economics classes) mean you'll have plenty of opportunities to participate, ask questions, and seek additional guidance if necessary. The professors are generally known to be supportive and there on-campus hours if you need help outside the class.

Internship opportunities are abundant. Colby has strong relationships with alumni and corporations in diverse industries. These connections can help provide you with internships during the school year or summer, and these hands-on experiences can be invaluable. You'll find Colby alumni at major financial institutions, think tanks, government agencies, NGOs, and more.

In addition, Colby's location in Maine offers a unique opportunity for economics students interested in environmental and sustainability issues, as these fields are significant and growing aspects of Maine's economy.

It's always best to visit the campus, engage with current students and professors in the Economics department, and see if the program aligns with your personal and academic interests. You can also look at the college's alumni outcomes to see where economics graduates end up and what type of roles they secure.

So, Colby's Economics program is very strong, offering a great balance of rigorous coursework, faculty interaction, and breadth of internship opportunities. Can't wait for you to take this exciting step in your academic journey!
