Exploring CS + Math at UIUC

Hey everyone, just exploring my options here. I'm really into both Computer Science and Math, and I've been considering the joint program at UIUC. Anyone here enrolled in that program? Can you share your experiences? How's the workload, is it manageable if I also want to participate in some clubs and other extracurricular activities? Thanks in advance!

Response: That's a keen interest you're fostering! The Math and Computer Science joint degree at UIUC indeed offers an exciting interdisciplinary exploration of two complementary fields. While I'm not personally in the program, I can share some details that might give you a sense of the academic and extracurricular landscape there.

The coursework can be intensive, given the theoretical foundations of both disciplines. You're likely to encounter in-depth mathematical concepts, algorithms, and extensive coding. Balancing this with a set of robust extracurriculars could be challenging, but it varies person-to-person. One key thing to keep in mind is that quality is better than quantity when it comes to extracurricular activities. So, it's completely possible to be in your desired program and still be involved meaningfully outside of class, provided you don't stretch yourself too thin.

Simply put, if you're planning to join clubs related to your academic interests, like the Association for Computing Machinery or Math Club, you're more likely to find the workload more manageable as the activities might complement your theoretical studies.

Lastly, remember to take advantage of the resources available at UIUC. The Grainger Engineering Learning Teams (GELT) program, for example, is a great resource for first-year students transitioning to university-level STEM coursework.

As a subject that combines rigorous mathematical study with precise algorithmic thinking, it’s definitely a challenge but an enriching one!
