Thinking about CSULB for a Biology Major. Any thoughts?

I'm interested in biology and CSULB is in my list. What's the department like? How's the faculty and do they have good labs or research opportunities?

California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) indeed has quite a robust Biology Department. It offers a few concentrations for its Biology major, allowing students to find a niche in an area that most interests them. These include Cell and Molecular Biology, Ecology and Environmental Biology, Marine Biology, Microbiology, and Organismal Biology.

In terms of the faculty, a standout aspect of CSULB biology is the accessibility and support of faculty members. Many students comment on the faculty's dedication to student learning and their willingness to engage with students at a one-on-one level. This can be a great asset during your collegiate journey.

Concerning laboratory facilities, CSULB is equipped with a number of cutting-edge labs that supplement student learning and research. Some of these labs have specific focuses, like the Molecular and Biochemical Lab, the Environmental Microbiology Lab, and the Marine Biology Lab, to name a few.

In terms of research opportunities, these are definitely available, especially in the summer. Participating in research is an advisable matter for Biology majors. Research experience can provide you with a deeper understanding of biological concepts, and it can also provide you with practical skills that will be useful in your future career or graduate studies.

Moreover, the campus itself is located in a biologically diverse environment. This can provide additional opportunities for experiential learning, especially for students interested in marine or environmental biology.

Overall, the Biology program at CSULB has a lot to offer for students who are active in seeking out research opportunities and who value a supportive faculty and diverse environments for study. As always, it’s recommended to visit the campus and possibly meet with a faculty member from the department to ensure it's the right environment for you.
