Prospects for Civil Engineering at Duke University?

Hey everyone, I'm a current high school junior whos been extremely interested in Civil Engineering for as long as I can remember. I've had my eyes on Duke University due to its prestige. If you went there or know someone who did, how good is their Civil Engineering program? What kind of job placements and internship opportunities do they offer for this major?

Duke University has a well-renowned Pratt School of Engineering and I'm glad that you're considering its Civil Engineering program. Duke's reputation as a research institution undoubtedly benefits its engineering students, providing plenty of opportunities for hands-on learning and research experience.

When it comes to job placements and internships, Duke has a dedicated Career Center and Engineering-specific career services that act as valuable resources in securing placements. Duke's location in Durham, NC also provides a good balance of access to both major industries/biotech companies and government research facilities, enhancing the potential for internships and job opportunities for engineering students.

It’s also noteworthy that Duke offers the "Grand Challenge Scholars" program where students can work towards research-based, interdisciplinary, and globally-minded solutions to pressing societal challenges. This program can be an added benefit for a Civil Engineering student as it resonates with the principles of civil engineering—namely, improving infrastructural and environmental systems for the community.

With respect to alumni outcomes, a good portion of Duke’s engineering graduates go on to jobs in sectors such as consulting, finance, and tech or pursue further studies in graduate programs. However, it’s also important to remember that a large part of job placement and securing internships depends on individual effort and utilizing networking opportunities.

In essence, Duke's Civil Engineering will provide you with a solid foundation in the principles of the field along with a breadth of opportunities to intern, research, and apply what you're learning. Make sure to take advantage of their extensive resources that are put in place!
