Thoughts on Harvard University's Religious Studies?

Hope everyone's doing well. I'm very interested in Religious Studies and been considering Harvard. Has anyone studied this at Harvard? How rigorous is the department? What opportunities exist for broadening experiences, like internships or field trips? Your input would be greatly appreciated.

As a current student familiar with Harvard's Religious Studies, I can tell you that it's integrated within the Committee on the Study of Religion Department. This program stands out because it draws from a number of departments across the University including Anthropology, Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, and East Asian Languages and Civilizations, enhancing the perspectives of the program.

The curriculum is indeed rigorous. Like many other Harvard programs, it's designed to give you a comprehensive understanding of the field you're studying. You'll explore a variety of religious traditions, delve into influential texts, and study different theoretical approaches. You will also get an opportunity to specialize in a specific tradition or methodological approach if you so choose.

Harvard also has resources for students studying religion to expand their learning beyond the classroom. The Pluralism Project, for example, explores and documents the growing religious diversity of the United States. As a Religious Studies student, you could get involved in the project's research. Also, Harvard's location in Boston, a city known for its historical religious landmarks, provides ample opportunities for local field trips.

Regarding opportunities for internships or independent studies, your academic advisers would be a good starting point. They can connect you with potential mentors, alumni in your field, and other resources to help you find opportunities that align with your academic and career goals. You can also leverage the Office of Career Services, which can help you identify internships related to religious studies.

Nonetheless, you might also want to connect with current students or professors in the program for a direct perspective, or sit in on a class if you're able to. This could offer you a first-hand glimpse of the Harvard Religious Studies experience. Good luck with your college search!
