Applying to Hawaii Manoa, Need Help

Hey guys, I'm really interested in applying to the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Can anyone provide a detailed rundown on their application process? How competitive is it to get accepted? I'm especially interested in their business program if anyone has insight on that.

Sure, happy to help provide some insight into the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM) application process.

UHM uses the Common Application, so you'll have one personal statement, typically between 650 words, and then potentially a few supplemental essays (although the UHM has not traditionally asked for supplemental essays). Besides the essays, you'll need to fill out other basic information including your background, extracurricular activities, honors, and coursework.

As for test scores, UHM does require SAT or ACT scores. However, as of the 2024-2025 cycle, they are test-optional, which means you can choose to submit the scores if you believe they would enhance your application. Remember, taking the SAT and ACT with writing is no longer in contention as these tests have removed the essay portion.

You will also need to submit your high school transcript, showcasing your academic achievement throughout high school. UHM doesn't publish the average GPA of their accepted students, but most likely, a high GPA will be advantageous given that it's a key part of most college admissions processes.

The school is known for being somewhat selective. The acceptance rate at UHM is around 84%, meaning the majority of students who apply get in. However, it's always smart to not solely rely on acceptance rates, as they don't tell the full story on an applicant's fit and suitability for a particular program.

Speaking of programs, you mentioned you're interested in their business department. The Shidler College of Business at UHM is well-regarded, particularly known for its emphasis on Asian-Pacific business studies given Hawaii's location. If you're particularly interested in that region, it may be a good fit for you. Like most business programs, Shidler offers a variety of concentrations, such as Accounting, International Business, and Marketing, among others.

Hope this helps you sort out your application to UHM. Good luck!
