Diversity at Loyola University

As a international student, cultural flexibility is important to me. How diverse is Loyola University, generally speaking? What kind of efforts are made by the university to promote diversity?

Loyola University, specifically Loyola University Chicago, is committed to creating and maintaining a diverse community. With students coming from all 50 states and over 82 countries, it provides an atmosphere rich in diversity.

The University takes numerous steps to promote inclusion and diversity on their campuses. The office of Student Diversity & Multicultural Affairs (SDMA) is particularly dedicated to this cause. Setting ground for diversity and inclusion discussions, it serves as a resource for all students, staff, and faculty by organising cultural celebrations, workshops, and programs throughout the year. For instance, they host events for Black History Month, Latinx Heritage Month, Asian Pacific Islander Desi American Heritage Month, and more.

An interesting initiative is the SDMA's 'Loyola University Chicago Empowering Sisterhood' program (LUCES), a program geared towards creating an inclusive space for women of color. The university also offers many student organizations to celebrate and uplift the voices of marginalized communities, such as the Black Cultural Center, the Latin American Student Organization and the Asian Pacific American Coalition.

Loyola University also has a variety of study abroad programs, allowing students to immerse themselves in different cultures, further enhancing the intercultural understanding within the university community.
