Are internships or research experiences more valuable during undergrad?

Hello everyone! As a high school junior and future engineering major, I'm torn between two main priorities for my college experience: gaining research experience vs. getting internships. I'm still unsure whether I want to go into industry or academia after graduation. Are research experiences more valuable for someone who's uncertain about their future path, or would internships be the better way to gain real-world experience? Any thoughts or advice on how to make this decision would be really helpful. Thank you!

Hey there! It's great that you're thinking about your future and planning ahead. Both internships and research experiences offer unique benefits and can give you valuable insights into the engineering field.

Internships usually provide a taste of what working in the industry is like and can help you establish connections with professionals. These experiences can also help you build your skill set and boost your resume for future job opportunities.

On the other hand, research experiences allow you to delve deeper into specific areas of interest within engineering. It could help you determine if pursuing a higher degree (Master's or Ph.D.) is something you'd be interested in. Research experiences can also help you develop critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, which are invaluable skills in the engineering field.

Given your current uncertainty, it could be helpful to explore both options during your college years. You can try pursuing internships during summers and participating in research projects during the academic year, or vice versa. This way, you'll get a balanced experience that can help you make a more informed decision about your future. Good luck!
