Considering Neuroscience major at Barnard?

Hey guys! Recently, I've developed an interest in neuroscience and I'm particularly eyeing Barnard for pursuing it. Can anyone tell me more about the program there? What's it like and how rigorous is it?

Barnard College has a strong neuroscience program, and overall, it offers a rich and rigorous academic experience. It has a different approach compared to many other colleges as it isn't solely focused on the medical or clinical aspects of neuroscience but rather emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach.

The Neuroscience and Behavior (NSB) major at Barnard is part of the Department of Psychology, and it integrates courses from both psychology and biology. This gives you an overarching view of the field, allowing you to understand neuroscientific phenomena from various perspectives—including biological, cognitive, and developmental. You will learn about the cellular and molecular makeup of the nervous system, as well as how these affect behavior and cognitive functions.

Regarding the program's rigor, it is considered challenging but definitely manageable. The curriculum includes a number of demanding courses such as Cellular & Molecular Neuroscience, Cognitive Neuroscience and Systems & Behavioral Neuroscience. Apart from these, there are also laboratory courses and a senior research project which provide practical experience.

The major also provides a lot of flexibility in terms of electives which can be chosen from a wide range of subjects such as neuropharmacology, neurology, physiology, and genetics, just to name a few.

One thing to keep in mind is that while Barnard is a women's college, as a Barnard student, you have access to all of the resources and academic opportunities offered by Columbia University. This includes being able to take Columbia neuroscience courses and utilize Columbia's research facilities if you wish.

So, if you're passionate about neuroscience and ready for an interesting (and very interdisciplinary) challenge, Barnard could be an excellent fit for you! Remember, though, that maintaining a balance between academics and other aspects of college life is crucial for a holistic experience.
