Space Lovers Unite - Thoughts on Syracuse University's Aerospace Engineering?

Hi everyone! I'm a junior high schooler passionate about space and considering a major in Aerospace Engineering. Syracuse University is on my list, but does anyone have insights into their Aerospace Engineering program?

While Syracuse University is known for a number of different programs, from its renowned Journalism School to its popular Information Studies majors, the Aerospace Engineering program isn't typically the first one that comes to mind. However, that's not to say that the program isn't effective. The university does offer both undergraduate and graduate degrees in aerospace engineering under the College of Engineering and Computer Science, which can definitely provide a solid foundation for your interest in space.

One thing to note about the program is its focus on experiential learning. Through hands-on labs, internships, and involvement in research projects, the program seeks to equip students with practical skills to supplement their theoretical knowledge. The curriculum emphasizes key technical concepts related to aerodynamics, flight mechanics, propulsion, and structural analysis, among others, to prepare students for potential careers in aerospace engineering.

Many students and faculty collaborate on projects within their Carrier Dome, one of the largest dome stadiums in the country where indoor flight tests and drone projects often take place. This offers unique extracurricular and real-world experience opportunities!

While Syracuse's program might not have the standing of some comparable programs at other notable tech-focused schools like MIT or Caltech, it offers a well-rounded collegiate experience that balances solid engineering training with the benefits of a traditional university environment.

As with any school or program, I'd encourage you to dive deeper beyond rankings. Reach out to current students or alumni from the program, take a virtual tour, attend info-sessions to get a feel for the program and the university overall. Your experience will also depend a lot on the effort you put in and your ability to leverage opportunities. So, if Syracuse's program appeals to you, it might be worth further exploration!
