Pondering an Econ Major at UConn - Any Thoughts?

Hey everyone, exploring UConn as a potential choice for pursuing an Economics major. Can anyone shed some light on the department, course structure, opportunities, and faculty? Would also love to hear any personal experiences if there are current students or alums lurking around here.

UConn's Economics department is quite robust and offers a variety of courses that cover both macro and microeconomics topics, as well as more specialized fields like industrial organization, economic history, and labor economics. The program often emphasizes quantitative skills, which can help you when it comes to jobs or graduate school. It also has a dual-degree program where you can get both a Bachelor's and Master's in 5 years, which is an excellent opportunity if you're thinking about graduate school.

The faculty is generally well-regarded and many professors have done research in diverse areas of economics. They can serve as great mentors and resources for your research or for getting internships/jobs. If you're pursuing the honors program or are interested in research, having such educated and connected faculty can be a massive advantage.

In terms of opportunities, UConn has a few student organizations related to economics, which can be a valuable way to connect with other students in your major and engage in enrichment activities. An example is the UConn Economics Society which allows for the discussion and dissemination of economic ideas and issues.

Like most schools, your experience at UConn's Econ department will largely be what you make of it. Make sure to network with your professors and peers, seek out research and internship opportunities connected to your interest areas, and be proactive about getting involved in relevant extracurriculars and clubs.

Hopefully, this gives you some insight into what it's like to be an Econ major at UConn!
