I've been looking at Texas State for a while now but I'm not 100% familiar with Texas geography. Can anyone fill me in on where it's located? Also, what's the surrounding area like? Would be great to hear some thoughts.
Texas State University is located in San Marcos, Texas, which is about halfway between two major Texan cities, Austin and San Antonio. To be precise, it's approximately 30 miles south of Austin and around 50 miles northeast of San Antonio.
San Marcos offers a blend of small town vibes and college-town energy with Texas State as its centerpiece. The town perches on the edge of Texas Hill Country, famous for its picturesque vistas and hiking opportunities. You'd be close to the San Marcos River, which is a popular spot for kayaking, tubing, and even snorkeling!
The city offers various cultural and recreational activities, too. The downtown area, essentially adjacent to campus, is brimming with local shops, cafés, and restaurants. For those interested in shopping, the city is home to two large outlet malls. Despite its smaller size, San Marcos is infused with a sense of vibrancy from the university's strong presence, making it a lively place to live and study.
Keep in mind, the bigger cities of Austin and San Antonio are less than an hour's drive away if you ever want to partake in a larger city's amenities or explore even more diverse social and cultural opportunities.
