Experiences with UNLV Software Engineering Program?

Hey folks, I'm a junior looking at software engineering as my potential major. UNLV seems like a good fit for me on paper, but I'm interested in hearing about any personal experiences. How's the curriculum? Are there any opportunities for internships or co-ops in tech companies?

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) has a solid software engineering program, and though I'm not a current student or alumni, I can share what I've heard from students who've pursued that major.

The curriculum at UNLV is designed to equip students with strong foundational knowledge in software development and the broader field of computer Science. You'll cover a range of topics including algorithms, data structures, networking, databases, and even delve into various aspects of cybersecurity. You'll also have courses that offer hands-on experience with different programming languages such as Python, Java, C++, among others.

In terms of practical experience, UNLV's location can be an asset for internships. Las Vegas has a steadily growing tech sector, providing ample opportunities for internships and co-op placements. While the university does help facilitate these opportunities through their career services and the Lee Business School's Career and Professional Development Office, it's essential to also conduct an independent search.

In addition, UNLV hosts several job fairs which often include tech companies looking for interns or prospective employees. Participating in these events might boost your chances of landing an internship or a job post-graduation. Also, consider joining clubs or societies related to software engineering, as they often have industry professionals as guest speakers and can be an excellent networking opportunity.

If you get a chance, reaching out to current students or professors in the software engineering program can provide a more detailed personal experience. Or, you could arrange a campus tour to get a feel for the atmosphere and perhaps sit in on a couple of classes if it's permitted.
