Universities supporting ASL Majors

Hey! I'm an HS junior passionate about American Sign Language (ASL). Can anyone recommend universities offering solid ASL major programs? Thanks in advance.

Absolutely, it's wonderful to see your interest in ASL. Here are a few universities well-known for their robust ASL programs:

1. Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., is the only university in the world where all programs and services are specifically designed to accommodate deaf and hard of hearing students. They offer both ASL Studies and Deaf Studies majors.

2. The University of Rochester has the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID), which offers a degree program in ASL-English Interpretation.

3. Indiana University Bloomington offers a BT in ASL/English Interpreting, as well as a minor in ASL.

4. University of Southern Maine also has strong ASL-related programs.

5. Northeastern University is recognized for their interpretation program.

These programs not only teach students how to sign fluently, but they also provide an in-depth understanding of Deaf culture. The goal is to build communication bridges between the hearing and the Deaf communities. Do note, though, that you should also consider other factors besides the ASL major when choosing a university, such as location, size, financial aid, and overall fit. Good luck with your college search!
