Curious about Civil Engineering at Virginia Tech

Hey guys, I'm a junior and I'm really leaning towards civil engineering for my major. I've been looking into Virginia Tech's engineering program, but I'm having some trouble finding specific info on the Civil Engineering program. Does anyone here know how it compares to other programs? Thanks!

Virginia Tech has an excellent reputation not just for their overall engineering program, but specifically for their Civil Engineering program as well.

Rigor and reputation-wise, it consistently ranks in the top tier both nationally and globally. This means potential employers are aware of the program’s prestige, something that could potentially give you an edge in job placements post-graduation.

The Civil Engineering program at VT is known for its comprehensive and well-designed curriculum, coupled with plenty of opportunities for hands-on, practical learning experiences. In addition to a solid foundation in general civil engineering principles, you'll be able to specialize in areas such as structural, environmental, geotechnical, water resources, transportation, and construction engineering.

In terms of research opportunities, students have the chance to work alongside experienced faculty members, contributing to cutting-edge research in various sub-disciplines of Civil Engineering.

Finally, VT also has several active student organizations related to engineering, including the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Chi Epsilon Civil Engineering Honors Society, and the Concrete Canoe team, allowing you to get more involved in your prospective field beyond academics.

As with any institution, it may be beneficial to try to connect with current students or alumni to get their firsthand perspectives. Also, consider reaching out to the department directly for the most specific and accurate information. Let me know if you need help with anything else!
