What is the Math Program Like at Tufts?

Anyone familiar with the math program at Tufts? I'm seriously considering it and I'd appreciate any insights and experiences you all might be able to share, including info on professors, class sizes, research opportunities, internships, etc. Thanks!

Tufts University's Department of Mathematics is known for its rigorous curriculum and supportive learning environment, featuring a balance of both theoretical and applicable math instructional approaches. The department offers both a Bachelor of Sciences and a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics, providing flexibility based on a student's specific interests and future career plans.

Class sizes within the math department typically start larger for entry-level classes (calculus, linear algebra), ranging from 30-60 students and becoming much smaller, usually around 15-20 students, for upper-level classes such as Number Theory or Combinatorial Mathematics. This smaller environment facilitates close interaction and engagement with the faculty, fostering an environment where students can ask questions and delve deeper into complex topics.

One standout component of the Tufts mathematics program is the opportunity for research. The department offers a range of research opportunities through independent studies, as well as the Universal Scholars Program, which allows undergraduates to contribute to existing research or develop their own projects throughout the year with the guidance of faculty mentors.

In terms of the faculty, professors in the department are recognized for their areas of expertise and dedication to teaching. There are also numerous senior faculty members who are actively engaged in research, providing an added learning experience for students interested in those specific areas of mathematics.

Furthermore, the Mathematics department at Tufts has partnerships with several local companies and institutions, offering internships and co-op opportunities. These experiences are beneficial not only for applying learned concepts in real-world contexts, but also for solidifying professional networks and enhancing job prospects post-graduation.

Remember, what makes a program fit for you depends on your specific goals and interests, and it's advisable to reach out directly to the department or current students for the most personalized information.
