Where is Chicago State University located and what should I expect?

Hi all, I'm in the process of college hunting and stumbled across Chicago State University. Could anyone tell me where it's situated and something about the surrounding environment? Thanks!

Chicago State University is situated on the South Side of Chicago, specifically in the Roseland area. The campus itself is actually quite green and park-like for an urban university, which is a nice contrast to the bustling city around it.

In terms of your daily needs, there are plenty of amenities close by. There are several shopping centers and local eateries nearby, including grocery stores, drug stores, and recreational facilities.

Regarding the social scene, being in Chicago means you have easy access to a lot of cultural institutions and events. There are several museums, theaters, music festivals, restaurants, and sports venues. For example, you're not too far from the Museum of Science and Industry, the Art Institute of Chicago, the historic Pullman District, and the Adler Planetarium.

However, keep in mind that while there are a lot of benefits to being in a major city, there's also the question of safety. Chicago has a diverse range of neighborhoods, some of which can be challenging. I recommend doing some research on the area, visiting the campus to get a feel for it yourself, and maybe even talking with current students to understand what precautions the university security provides and what precautions students themselves take.

Chicago also offers a robust public transportation system. The Metra Electric District train line has a stop right near campus, and it will take you directly to downtown Chicago. The CTA’s Red Line is also a relatively short bus trip away, which gives you additional access to the city.

As for the campus itself, Chicago State University offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs. The student body is primarily made up of commuter students, meaning fewer students live on campus, which contributes to a particular campus culture. Make sure that fits your expectations as you consider this school.

Bear in mind that attending an urban university like Chicago State University provides opportunities for internships, networking, and career development that are deeply entwined with the nearby professional and cultural assets of the city.

I hope this helps. Happy college hunting!
