Arizona State financial aid – How does it work?

So, I'm interested in applying to Arizona State University, but a bit worried about the cost. Can any of you lovely folks break down how the financial aid process at ASU works? Any hidden scholarships or grants I should be aware of?

It's always wise to evaluate the cost of college as part of your application decision process. When it comes to financial aid at Arizona State University (ASU), there are a few key things to note.

First, you will want to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is how ASU, and most other colleges, determine your eligibility for need-based aid. The FAFSA determines your Student Aid Index (SAI), which is a number used to quantify your family's financial need. It notably can be as low as negative $,1500 and is no longer divided based on the number of siblings you have attending college.

ASU offers both need-based and merit-based financial aid to its students. The university awards its need-based financial aid (grants, loans, and work-study) based largely on the information in the FAFSA.

The university also has a variety of merit-based scholarships that are awarded based on academic excellence, leadership, and/or other special talents. These can greatly reduce the cost of attending ASU. Importantly, all merit-based scholarships at ASU require a separate application. Applicants for merit-based scholarships typically have strong academic records, but the criteria vary by scholarship.

As for hidden scholarships, the New American University Scholar awards are ASU's most generous, and they don't require a separate application. If your academic achievements place you in an eligible group, you will be automatically considered for these scholarships.

ASU also offers several highly competitive scholarships, like the Obama Scholars and Leaders Academy programs, that require separate applications and cover up to the full cost of attendance.

Finally, there's a wide range of departmental scholarships at ASU, for everything from journalism to engineering. These are worth exploring, but be aware that deadlines and requirements vary by department.

Hope this gives you a decent overview. Good luck with your college applications!
