Common App Essay: How Much Can I Actually Write?

Stressed out junior here: I've just started working on my Common App essay and heard about a word limit. How strict is this and what is the max allowed? Would going a bit over be an issue? Any advice on maxing out the word limit would be really appreciated!

The Common App essay does have a word limit, and it's best to take it seriously. The prompt you choose will specify a limit of 650 words, and this number is a maximum— not a recommendation. The application system won't let you submit an essay that's over the limit as the textbox won't allow you to write more than 650 words.

That being said, don't feel obliged to write exactly 650 words. If you can convey your message effectively in fewer words, that's great too. The goal is to deliver a concise and impactful essay, so the focus should be on quality rather than purely on the word count. In some cases, trying to fill up each last word of the limit can lead to adding fluff or redundancy, which can harm the quality of your essay.

Remember, admissions officers have to read hundreds, if not thousands, of essays. If your essay is concise, clear, and engaging, it will stand out positively. In short, word choice and narrative should drive your writing, not the exact length. Good luck with your writing process!
