how many times can you take the act

Hi all! I'm a junior looking to take the ACT. How many times can you take this test? Is there a limit or can I keep retaking until I score well? I don't want to overdo it but at the same time, I want to make sure I get the best score possible.

Hello! The ACT doesn't have any restrictions on the number of times you can take the test. You have the flexibility to retake the ACT as many times as you'd like to improve your score.

However, it's important to consider a few factors when deciding how many times to take the ACT. Firstly, each ACT test administration comes with a cost, and the time you invest in prepping for each test also counts. If you've already scored within the range you're aiming for, consider whether retaking is the best use of your time and money.

Secondly, keep in mind that colleges interpret multiple test scores differently; some colleges only consider your highest composite score, while others superscore, meaning they take the highest section score from each test to calculate a new composite score.

Finally, keep in mind that while improved scores can certainly enhance your application, they're usually just one component of the holistic admissions process. Other factors, such as your GPA, extracurricular activities, and essays, also have significant impact.

So while there is no official limit to how many times you can take the ACT, it's good practice to target 2-4 attempts. After that point, you'll likely see diminishing returns, and your time may be better spent focusing on other components of your college application. Good luck in your preparation, and remember the aim is not just to increase your score but to perform as effectively as you can.
