Good ACT Scores: What should I aim for?

Guys, I'm super nervous about the ACT. I took it for the first time, and I'm unsure if my score is good or bad. What's considered a good score for most colleges?

While a "good" ACT score can somewhat depend on the colleges you're aiming for, let's talk in broad strokes.

ACT scores range from 1 - 36, and a composite score above 21 would generally be considered good, as it's above the national average. However, if you're targeting more selective schools, you might want to aim for a much higher score.

For instance, Ivy League universities usually have an average ACT score between 32 and 35. Meanwhile, other less competitive but still highly respected institutions might have an average score somewhere in the upper 20s or lower 30s.

Keep in mind, though, that while standardized testing is a critical component of your application, it's not everything. Colleges will also consider your GPA, extracurricular activities, essays, and letters of recommendation.

So, a good strategy can be to research the average ACT scores of students admitted to your dream schools, and then aim to achieve at least that score — of course, higher is always better.

Let's not forget that standardized tests can be retaken, and many students see improvement in their scores after a second or third attempt. So, don't stress too much over it! You've got multiple shots at achieving your goal score.
