Difference between Dual Major and Double Major?

Help needed here! I'm pretty bent on studying both Computer Science and Economics. I've seen terms like 'dual major' and 'double major' being used interchangeably. Is there a significant difference between the two? Is one easier to manage than the other?

The terms dual major and double major are often used interchangeably, but there can be some differences depending on specific collegiate institutions.

A double major typically means you’re receiving one degree, with concentrations in two distinct fields. You fulfill the requirements of both programs under the same degree - for instance, a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science. An example could be achieving a Bachelor of Science in both Computer Science and Economics.

On the other hand, a dual degree, or sometimes referred to as a dual major, usually refers to completing two different degrees simultaneously. This may result in receiving two separate diplomas, one for each program of study, like a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics.

As for which is easier to manage, a double major within one degree can be easier because you don't need to meet two separate sets of degree requirements. Yet, this also depends on how closely related the two majors are and the specific requirements for each major.

In both cases, managing two majors requires careful planning to fulfill all the major requirements within your expected graduation timeline. If Computer Science and Economics are your intended fields of study, a key step would be to meet with academic advisors in both departments to get a clear understanding of the requirements and to gauge how manageable it would be for you to take on both majors together.
