How Many Years of Math Are Required in High School?

I am a bit of a mess when it comes to math and I am wondering, just how many years of math am I realistically expected to complete in high school? Does it vary from high school to high school or is there a standard?

The number of years of math required in high school can indeed vary based on the specific school, but generally, most high schools require at least three years of math. This typically includes algebra, geometry, and algebra II. However, for college-bound students, it's often recommended that you take at least four years of math, including pre-calculus or calculus if possible.

The more selective the college, the more they'll expect to see. So, if you're aiming for more competitive schools, the expectations could be higher. Not only do they want to see that you've taken more years of math, but they also value the rigor of the courses. So taking higher-level math courses can reflect positively on your academic preparedness for college.

Also, note that even if your future college major isn't math-heavy, strong math skills can be beneficial for a range of fields and can demonstrate your problem-solving abilities. Do remember to consult with your high school guidance counselor to understand the exact requirements in your specific school and make sure you're on track for graduation as well as college admissions.
