What are some important SAT words to study?

Hey, I'm preparing for the SAT, and I understand there's a vocabulary component to it. So, with the crazy amount of words out there, are there any particular words list I should focus on? Appreciate the help!

Hi there!

While vocabulary was a significant component of the SAT prior to its 2016 redesign, the exam now focuses less on obscure words and more on testing students' understanding of words in context. So, merely memorizing vocabulary lists might not be the best use of your study time.

However, there are definitely some words that are commonly used on the SAT, especially in the Reading and Writing sections. Some of the words that are commonly seen include:

- Central/Primary: Main, principal, chief.

- Evidence/Indicate/State: Show, signify, demonstrate.

- Suggest: Propose, hint, indicate.

- Contrast/Negate: Disagree, differ, deny.

- Analyze/Evaluate: Examine, assess, scrutinize.

It's also important to understand words that could be used in various contexts and those that have subtly different meanings. For instance, understand the difference between 'affect' (a verb meaning to influence) and 'effect' (a noun meaning result).

Instead of studying isolated lists of words, you may find it more beneficial to study vocabulary within its context. This can be done by reading challenging books, articles, and scholarly essays. Also, when you come across new words, try to understand their meaning through the context they are used in, and then cross-check with a dictionary.

The College Board also provides free, official SAT practice tests on their website that you should definitely take advantage of. These practice tests will give you an idea of the kind of vocabulary, and more importantly, the kind of questions, you'll face on the actual SAT.

Remember, the key to doing well in SAT vocabulary isn't just about memorizing words, but understanding how to use them effectively in context. Happy studying!
