UC System Application—any important tips?

What's up guys, I'm starting to fill out the UC application and honestly, I'm a bit overwhelmed. Any other Californians here who've been down this road and have some wisdom to share? Always better to learn from those who've survived the process.

Absolutely! Having worked with many students on the UC application process, I know it can be a bit daunting initially. Here are a few pointers to help you out.

First things first, start early! The UC application filing period is from October 1 to November 30, so you have time, but it is important not to rush. There's a lot that you'll be asked to fill out and it's crucial that you give yourself enough time to carefully consider your responses.

When it comes to the Personal Insight Questions, remember to focus on depth rather than breadth. The UC system uses these to replace the traditional single long-form college essay, and they want you to spend time reflecting on your experiences. Choose four questions that you think will give the admissions officers a well-rounded view of who you are and what you bring to the table. Ideally, each essay should highlight a different aspect of yourself or your experiences to paint a complete picture.

Remember that the UC system does not use the Common App, so the application is unique and a bit more exhaustive. However, from an admissions viewpoint, it makes things rather streamlined and helps them in reviewing the applications more efficiently.

Something that often gets overlooked but can give you a major edge is the additional comments section. If there are aspects of your application that need clarification or important details that have not been covered in other sections, this is where you discuss them.

Also, be aware that the UCs do not consider demonstrated interest in their reviews. So while it's great to visit campuses or to chat with admissions officers, these actions will not directly boost your chances of admission.

Finally, don't exhaust yourself trying to perfect every minute detail. As long as you've given it your best shot and your application represents you accurately, be content with it. The UCs are looking to appreciate you for who you are, so let your application showcase that.

Remember the process can be stressful, but you're doing your best. Best of luck with your application!
