How do 8th and 9th grade performances affect admissions?

Hey everyone, I'm getting pretty nervous about how my performance in 8th and 9th grade will affect my college applications. I had a bit of a rough start and my transcript isn't exactly the best back then. Do colleges scrutinize your entire High School journey or just the later years?

Hey there, it's understandable that looking forward to college applications might cause some nerves. Let's see if we can get you some clarity on the matter.

Typically, colleges are most interested in your high school performance from 9th through 12th grade. What happens in 9th grade does matter, but most colleges place greater emphasis on grades from 10th, 11th, and to some extent 12th grade (the part of senior year they see before decisions are released). This is because these later grades are seen as stronger indicators of your potential performance in college.

Moreover, colleges understand that the transition from middle school to high school can be challenging, and it isn't unusual for students to have a learning curve as they adjust to new expectations and increased rigor. Indeed, demonstrating an upward trend in your grades is viewed positively. So number one, don't panic! You still have time to improve and show colleges that you're dedicated and capable.

While course rigor matters, it's also important to balance out academic work with other aspects of your application, like extracurricular involvement and standardized testing, if applicable. Keep in mind, the college application process takes into account a variety of factors to get a comprehensive understanding of a student's abilities, achievements, and potential.

Keep on working hard, honing your interests, and pushing forward. Even if the beginning was rocky, finish strong. Remember, every year is a new opportunity to grow and reflect that growth in your academics. Best of luck to you!
