Hey everyone, I'm getting closer to applying to colleges and I'm considering majoring in Psychology. I've had a look into USU's program, but wanted to get some personal experiences or insights. Any current or former Psychology majors at Utah State University willing to share their experience? What's the curriculum like and how's the faculty support?
Hello there. I've done some research on this and while I wasn't personally a psychology major at USU, I can provide some external insight based on what I have gathered.
Utah State University's psychology program is known for its rigor and the diversity of courses they offer. They have areas of study ranging from social to clinical psychology, cognitive science, lifespan development and neuropsychology, which is very comprehensive and gives you a good foundation if you want to pursue a graduate degree in the future. You won't be limited in your choices of specialties.
From what I've heard from students who've been through the program, the faculty is very supportive. They take the time to work with students individually and are always willing to provide extra help as needed. This includes not only academic support but also mentorship for research opportunities or finding internships. You'd be surprised by how passionately they are involved in the field beyond simply teaching.
Also, the Psychology Student Organization at USU, seems to be very active with regular meetings, guest lectures, and opportunities for networking with professionals in the area. This could be an excellent resource for you to get involved and learn more about the field.
Just remember to balance out your coursework and extracurriculars, since the workload can be quite challenging. Also, considering the field is heavily research-based, it might be beneficial to get involved in research early on. Some students find it beneficial to join a faculty member’s research lab as an undergraduate research assistant.
Choose your courses and professors carefully and always remember to ask for help when you need it. Your advisors will be invaluable assets in navigate through your academic journey, so make full use of office hours and availability offered by professors.
This is a general overview and your experience might vary based on many factors. I would recommend reaching out to the college's admission office or a current student through their psychology program to get more detailed and personalized insight.
Good luck with your college journey!
